Lawn Turning Brown and What to Do About It

Crab Grass, JoAnna Levenglick

The Hampton's is a place where everyone has a beautiful lawn. It is part of the scene to keep your place looking just as nice as the neighbor next door. My lawn was beautiful all summer long for I had installed sod and it was just gorgeous. It was only one week ago when I had looked at my lawn and I saw brown spots all over the area around the pool. I could not believe my eyes how a lawn that looked good all summer would look so bad in on week. What happened?
These are the steps I took to resolve the problem:
1. I looked online to see what was written about brown spots.
2. I went to Home Depot to get advice about products and what may be the problem.
I lucked out because the sales person really knew what he was talking about.
3. He had asked me the following questions:
1. Is there a dog peeing on the lawn?
2. Are there birds present eating on the lawn?
3. Is there crab grass?
4. Do I see little worms in the soil?
5. Is there a sprinkler system?
6. What time does the sprinkler system go on?
4. My answer was "yes" to questions 2,3,4 and 5.
HIS ADVICE:
1. I should remove all of the crab grass or it will come back next year...even though it will die this winter.
2. I should use a insecticide to kill the grub worms.
3. One week later the lawn should be fertilized and new seeds should be planted all over and and extra amount where the crab grass was pulled.
4. The man at Home Depot did say that the sprinker should go on in the early hours of the morning and not at night. My sprinkers start at 9 pm every night.
5. The grub worms were apparent in the soil under the crab grass.
I will keep you posted on the impovement of the lawn in weeks to come.

Beautiful White Cotton Dress for the Hamptons

This dress was in a store on Madison ave. It is such a nice example of a dress that can be worn to many places in the Hampton's this summer. I love the neckline and the flowers on the front of the dress and the brown belt. White cotton dress, JoAnna Levenglick

White Shoes for the Guys Will be Hot in the Hamptons

The color trend for the Summer is white. White is a wonderful color for most anyone can wear it and it doesn't matter where. I remember having a pair of white shoes when I was a kid and also remember those Shindig and Hullabaloo white boots. That was a very long time ago, but they are back, and in a very big way. Even guys will be wearing white shoes. These sneakers are worn by a guy with jeans. This is going to be very big in the Hampton's. It is cool looking and very hip. Photo, JoAnna Levenglick

Lawns and What it Takes to Get a Good One

It is springtime and time to think about how your lawn is going to look this summer. I am new to this and found the whole project very exhausting. I bought this house that came with a really bad lawn. It is close to the beach and had no sprinkler system. I leaned that time and soil are the two main things to consider when trying to get a nice beautiful lawn. Since I lived in the city most of my life I had no idea regarding what to do. I found myself reading online tips on getting a good lawn and I would ask the same questions to as many people to see how many came up with the same answer.
This is what I learned.: If you have a bad lawn and want to plant seed that you must do it in the fall, because the ground is still warm. You should not wait till the frost though. In New York October is about the latest time to consider, unless we experience unusually warm weather. If you want to do sod, then you can do that in the fall or the spring. I took the route of doing sod because I had surgery in the fall and I missed the deadline of getting seed planted. Here are the steps that I took.
1. Cleaned the area with weeds, tilled the old lawn, cleaned it, then leveled the area off.
2. I added top soil and peat moss that was to help level the area and add to the sandy soil that I have being near the beach. The sprinkler system was installed after the soil was delivered and spread out.
3. Lime was added to help balance the PH and fertilizer was used.
4. The sod was put down. It must be installed the same day that it is cut for it dries out very easily.
5. Sprinkler system was turned on to provide water beginning at 9 pm every night until 7 am with 1 hour intervals.

As for pricing. I got 4 quotes, and 3 were in the same ball park and the fourth was much less. I gambled and took the lowest price and am very happy. The guys were professional. They showed up every day and had several guys working all day long for over a week. It was not easy to do this job. I had no idea of how many people told me the wrong thing about doing a lawn. It is very costly and time consuming. I do recommend that you stay every day watching over the workers to make sure that they are doing what you want them to be doing. Good Luck!

Southampton Dump

The Southampton Recycle Center, also known as the dump is a pretty popular place these days for those who do not want to spend 30 dollars per can to have their trash picked up. The garbage must be divided between; bottles and cans in one bag, paper products in another and food must be put in green bags that cost 3.50 per bag. There is never a line, and it is very easy to use. Photo, JoAnna Levenglick
